Ballast Water Treatment Convention New Rules

LS post 63

The new requirements for the Ballast Water Treatment Convention (BWTC) took effect last September of 2017, with the main goal of establishing procedures for how ships treat their ballast water.  The BWTC is enforced by the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), which is a subsidiary group of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). Ballast water in ships has been determined to be one of the greatest threats to the sustainability of our world’s oceans.

When ships travel from one port to another and release ballast water from a completely different region, invasive marine organisms often spread to uncontrollable levels wreaking havoc on the fishing industry and even the health and livelihood of residents living in the area.  With new rules for the BWTC, all ships are to have a U.S. Coast Guard approved ballast water treatment system.

Air Purification in HVAC Duct Systems

post 79

Incorporating air purification systems in HVAC duct systems provides many health benefits to people by delivering air that is free from airborne viruses and bacteria.  Ultraviolet (UV) light is highly effective at sanitizing the air we breathe and can be incorporated into existing or newly renovated HVAC systems. UV air purification is important in many commercial settings and is becoming more popular in many residential installations as well.

UV air purifiers are proven to eliminate viruses, bacteria, mold spores, dust mites, volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and many harmful contaminants from the air.  Ozone emitting UV light purifiers also eliminate odors in the air removing foul or stale odors to deliver a fresh and clean scent free from harmful contaminants. Many commercial settings such as hospitals and doctor’s offices require clean air for patients that may already have a compromised immune system.  Providing a safe and clean environment where patients and visitors can breathe clean air is vitally important to overall health and well being and is especially important in medical facilities or nursing homes where the elderly are more susceptible to illness from germs.

In duct air purification systems are also utilized in industrial settings to clean the air in manufacturing facilities processing products such as plastics and rubber.  UV light purification provides safe and clean air for employees and helps businesses to meet strict code regulations for the air quality of their environment and any contaminants disposed of as by products.

Phototherapy Helps People with Eczema

post 95

Eczema causes itchy patches of dry skin that is bothersome and painful to people suffering from this irritating skin disorder.  While there is no known cure for eczema, some treatments exist that can help to lessen the symptoms. Ointments and corticosteroids work for some people, while UV light therapy has been a promising treatment for eczema which offers many benefits to patients.

UV light as a treatment for eczema is often highly effective at improving painful symptoms and controlling future outbreaks.   UV light treatment is also called phototherapy, which is delivered in a doctor’s office or under a doctor’s care with a prescription for a specialty lamp designed specifically for eczema treatment.  Phototherapy for eczema includes UV lamps which emit wavelengths in the UVA, UVB and narrow band UVB spectrum.

How Does a UV Lamp Work to Treat Eczema?

UV light is emitted in wavelengths which are measure by nanometers (nm) with UVA light in the range of 315nm to 400nm, UVB rays in the range of 280nm to 315nm with narrow band UVB measuring at 310nm.  All are proven to successfully treat eczema by suppressing an overactive immune system and reducing inflammation, pain and itching.

The most common type of phototherapy lamp used to treat eczema is the narrow band UVB treatment which mimics rays from the sun and is helpful to clear up symptoms of eczema.  A medication called Psoralen is required to be administered with UVA treatments which makes the skin more receptive to absorbing the UVA wavelengths.

How Does a UVC Light Bulb Work

UVC Light bulbs generate ultraviolet, UV, radiation within the UVC spectrum for the most powerful germicidal effectiveness.  UVC lamps eliminate bacteria, viruses, mold spores, fungi and harmful contaminants by penetrating the DNA of their cells. UVC radiation destroys the cells of microorganisms making them unable to reproduce, instantly rendering them harmless.

A specially designed UVC light bulb emits UV radiation at precisely 254 nanometer (nm), which delivers the most germicidal effectiveness.  UVC lamps designed to emit energy at 185 nm are used in ozone air purification lamps to effectively eliminate odors from the air including volatile organic compounds (VOCs).  UVC light bulbs provide fresh, clean and odor free air for improved health in many residential and commercial settings.

UVC Light Bulb Specifications

UVC light bulbs are typically low pressure, mercury lamps which provide the optimum amount of UV radiation at the right wavelength. When mercury atoms reach a high energy level, low pressure produces a mercury arc with radiates at exactly 254 nm. UVC lamps usually contain Argon gas or a mixture of Argon, Neon and other gases required in certain applications.

UVC light bulbs are manufactured similarly to fluorescent lamps, operating with a comparable discharge device.  The body of a UVC lamp is typically made of either:

L Glass – quartz and Titanium which blocks out 185nm

L Glass – soft glass designed to emit 254nm

VH Glass – pure fused quartz that transmits both 185nm and 254nm

UVC lamps do not have the inner phosphor coating which allows for maximum pass through of UV radiation.  UVC bulbs are not designated by voltage as incandescent bulbs are, but rather by operating voltage. The lamp ballasts determine and deliver the operating voltage required to break down rare gases.

Effective UV Curing Requires the Right UV Lamp

Ultraviolet radiation is utilized in many industrial and commercial processes worldwide to instantly dry and cure polymers.  When polymers such as epoxies, silicone and polyurethane are exposed to UV radiation, a photochemical reaction occurs which bonds and seals the polymer within seconds of exposure.

There are many advantages of using UV curing over other curing methods such as air drying or using chemicals.  Air drying polymers leaves the coating susceptible to contaminants such as dust to affect the quality of the surface as well as evaporation which can leave an uneven surface and an inconsistent process.  Using chemicals can pose a health risk to employees and requires purchasing, storing and disposing of chemicals properly.

UV curing delivers a quick and consistent process which results in enhanced product durability and strength without evaporation or contamination.

High Performance UV Lamps for Ballast Water Treatment Systems

post 110

UVC radiation is a highly effective, proven method of sterilizing and purifying water, air and surfaces.  With the new Ballast Water Treatment Convention, BWTC, that went into full effect last September of 2017, shipping companies are required to maintain an effective system on board their vessel.  Contaminated ballast water is considered to be one of the top 5 threats to the sustainability of the planet’s oceans, as foreign marine organisms are picked up in one port and released in another.

This has wreaked havoc on the fishing industry in many shipping ports and threatened the safety of human life in cases where foreign invaders take over without their natural predators.  Jellyfish have been known to multiply to uncontrollable levels while mussels attach to structures such as dams and bridges causing damage by upsetting the natural ecosystem. UV lamps utilized in ballast water sterilization systems solves this problem with a highly effective and simple to maintain system.

UV Lamps with Powerful Water Sterilization Effects

Ultraviolet technology is proven to sterilize water by instantly killing bacteria, viruses and microorganisms naked to the human eye.  With powerful wavelengths emitted at 254 nanometer, nm, the DNA of these living organisms is immediately altered making them unable to replicate rendering them harmless.

Phototherapy is using light to provide a therapeutic treatment and is proven to be highly effective at treating and curing many medical conditions.  Light therapy is used worldwide to help patients suffering from a host of various ailments.  It is important to know which type of light works best for specific conditions, as the wrong lighting may not help at all or could worsen some conditions.

Working with your doctor and respected lighting and phototherapy lamp providers can provide assurance that you are receiving the right type of treatment for your condition.

Phototherapy Successfully Treats Psoriasis and Other Skin Conditions

The National Psoriasis Foundation endorses the uses of phototherapy to treat psoriasis when under a doctor’s care.  Indoor tanning beds do not provide the same effective wavelength of UV light to treat psoriasis and can further damage skin.  It is important to use the right type of phototherapy lamps when treating psoriasis.

UVB light is effective in treating psoriasis by slowing down the production of new skin cells which allows the skin to heal. Patients may be sent home with a special phototherapy lamp which emits the proper amount of UVB rays.

Light therapy is also highly effective at treating other skin conditions such as eczema, acne, vitiligo and jaundice.

Light Therapy for Jaundice Treatment

UV light is used in hospitals in the newborn unit to treat jaundice in newborn babies.  Jaundice occurs when the liver does not break down toxins like a fully developed or well-functioning liver would.  UV light effectively breaks down bilirubin in the blood which is why these lamps are often referred to as ‘bili’ lights.  Phototherapy lamps used to treat jaundice may even be sent home with new parents to help nurture their baby’s liver to a healthy state.
